Have you ever had a feeling that everything was working against you? Nowadays this seems to be not uncommon. Urban life, lots of expectations, social pressure, frustrated relationships, health issues, unexpected bad news and so on. Life is tough, and just when you overcome one obstacle, there’s another one waiting. Before you know it, you’re overcame with an ongoing sense of hopelessness.
So, how do you keep going, managing all those troubles while trying to have a productive and balanced life?
Here are 5 tips to help you to keep hopes and even find happiness when going through trouble waters ...
1. POSITIVE THINKING
It's amazing how positive thinking can help people to overcome obstacles in life. And this is something everyone is capable of doing. This is what Elizabeth Edwards, a cancer survivor, used to say about it: "While I know the realities of my Stage IV diagnosis, I choose not to focus on statistics. I always imagine myself as being among the smaller percentage of patients who survive. So, I prefer to be happy and positive" (1)
2. DO THINGS YOU LOVE
Focus on your own needs and stop trying to please everybody. If you don’t think about yourself and what you can do to be happy, nobody else will. That’s the hard truth. So, why not go out and do lots of things you love? Maybe you can’t skydive every week or travel around the world every year, but as long as you get to do the things you love every once in a while, you will find greater happiness.
3. BE SURROUNDED OF PEOPLE YOU LIKE
Studies show that we are happiest when we are around those who are also happy. Stick with people who are joyful and make you laugh. Besides that, being lonely has been linked to worse physical and emotional health outcomes and poorer wellbeing. “Human beings are an ultra-social species — and our nervous systems expect to have others around us,” Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PhD, Science Director of the Greater Good Science Center at The University of California, Berkeley, tells NBC News BETTER.
4. BE KIND WITH OTHERS
Research shows that being kind to others can actually make us genuinely happy in a number of different ways. Deciding to be generous or cooperating with others activates an area of the brain called the striatum. Interestingly, this area responds to things we find rewarding, such as nice food and even addictive drugs. The feel-good emotion from helping has been termed “warm glow” and the activity we see in the striatum is the likely biological basis of that feeling.
5. DO NOT GIVE UP OF A WELL BALANCE LIFE
The famous physicist Albert Einstein reportedly used a wonderful simile that compared riding a bicycle with living successfully. "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving." So, BALANCE is a key ingredient. Body, mind, soul. Start by doing simple things like exercising every day, having a healthy nutrition, reading good books, having good times with family. Soon the wellness sensation will get your energy back and your self-confidence along with.
